Delancey Street Foundation Tree Lot Announced

Delancey Street Foundation Tree Lot Announced

Delancey Tree will operate the Tree Lot at Santa Anita Park on the Colorado Parking Lot.

Mimi Silbert, Delancey Street’s President and CEO.

A little about Delancey Street Foundation

“We’re considered the country’s leading residential self-help organization for substance abusers, ex-convicts, homeless and others who have hit bottom. Our average resident has been a hard-core drug addict for sixteen years, abusing alcohol and multiple drugs and has dropped out of school at the 7th grade and has been institutionalized several times. Many have been gang members; most have been trapped in poverty for several generations. Rather than hire experts to help the people with problems, we decided to run Delancey Street with no staff and no funding. Like a large family, our residents must learn to develop their strengths and help each other. It’s an approach to changing lives that is “against all odds”.

We said we were going to take ex-convicts and ex-addicts and teach them to be teachers, general contractors, and truck drivers. They said it couldn’t be done. We said we were going to take 250 people who had never worked and had no skills and teach them to build a 400,000 square foot complex as our new home on the waterfront. They said it couldn’t be done. We said we were going to partner with colleges and get people who started out functionally illiterate to achieve bachelor of arts degrees. They said it couldn’t be done. We said we were going to run successful restaurants, moving companies, furniture making, and cafés and bookstores without any professional help. They said it couldn’t be done. We said we were going to do all this with no staff, no government funding, and no professionals. They laughed and said it couldn’t be done.

We struggle a lot but we’ve been doing it. For over 40 years we’ve been developing a model of social entrepreneurship, of education, of rehabilitation and change that is exciting and full of hope. If you need help, or want to help, please contact us. Most of all, we hope you can feel as inspired by ordinary people’s abilities to achieve extraordinary accomplishments as we’ve been.”

ENTER WITH A HISTORY, LEAVE WITH A FUTURE

About our Tree Lots

“In all our locations around the country Delancey Street maintains Christmas tree lots. Conducted each year only between Thanksgiving and Christmas, this brief holiday promotion is an important training school in the basics of sales, particularly for new residents. Holiday buyers can also find at our tree lots mistletoe, indoor tree lights, decorated wreaths, living potted pines, tree removal bags and water bowls for trees. Flame retardant is also available. In addition to tree lots, our commercial decorating division sells large trees and decorates banks and large corporate headquarters in San Francisco and Los Angeles for the holidays. Residents not only create the designs but craft the decorations each year.”

“Delancey Street is an incredible mixture of pure idealism and hard practicality. It is the best and the most successful organization I have studied in the world” —Dr. Karl Menninger

Drunken Logic at 8:30PM

Drunken Logic at 8:30PM

Drunken Logic at 8:30

With the daring to transform a country ballad into a reggae tune and the scathing wit for social and personal satire, Drunken Logic makes music that “blend[s] more genres and styles than we have room to list, all in the name of creating an eclectic fast-forward sound that’s shaken up after each track” (Vanyaland). Frontman Jake Cassman walked away from an Ivy League education to forge a theatrical folk-rock sound influenced as much by Kurt Vonnegut and Jon Stewart as by artists like Dawes or Frank Turner. Since then, DL has released two critically acclaimed albums, shot several award-winning music videos, and performed at major events and venues like AT&T Park and First Night Boston.

Jake’s artistic journey has taken him around the world and back again, with jobs in every corner of the music industry and performances at everything from celebrity galas to improv comedy shows. He’s also participated in grassroots campaigns for automatic voter registration and universal healthcare, and taught songwriting classes to young people trying to find their voices. Despite his busy schedule, Jake still saves time for pickup basketball, urban and rural hiking, and trying new beers based solely on their names.

Most recently, Drunken Logic donated their song and video “What A Beautiful Morning!” to the 30 Days, 30 Songs project for a Trump-free America, alongside artists like Death Cab for Cutie, R.E.M. and more. And with each step forward, they have been careful to give back to their community by supporting progressive causes and hosting music workshops for young people. This year, Jake has returned to his home state of California to release DL’s third record, The Loudness Wars — an unblinking reflection on the forces roiling our country and the people left in their wake. Consistently funny, always honest, and never boring, Drunken Logic is a powder keg of diverse rock music sparked by the American folk tradition — an inspiring and challenging sound defined by the times in which we live.

The Midway at 9:30 PM

The Midway at 9:30 PM

The Midway at 9:30 PM

The Midway was formed in Los Angeles, California when three friends who had a shared passion for driving, hard- hitting, catchy rock music decided to join forces. Singer/Guitarist Mike Rex says jokingly, “We realized we loved the same style of music, so we thought it made perfect sense to start a band”. The trio knew they had something special the first time they all plugged in. “It just clicked, it felt so natural”, says bassist Nelson Miranda. Drummer Brian Sheahan says, “It came together so fast! One day we are practicing for the first time, and then before I know it, we are playing shows. We are growing so fast”.

The band has quickly gained popularity in the Los Angeles scene for their unique sound. Drawing influences from all areas of Rock, Pop, and Punk, the band carefully blends their influences into their style to create a sound that resonates with audiences of all ages. “I think their style of music is fresh”, one fan says. “They really know how to walk the line, while making it sound cool. I feel like they are a blend of Green Day… meets The Killers… meets The Goo Goo Dolls.”

The band recently released their debut album on iTunes and Spotify,”Nowhere But Here”. The record showcases the band’s range of sounds. “Believe”, the lead- off single, is an upbeat anthem for anyone who has experienced issues with an unexpected breakup, which the band agrees: everyone has. “Stay Tonight” uses melodic string and piano arrangements that immerse the listener into a feeling everyone can relate to: the excitement, nervousness, and uncertainty of meeting someone special for the first time. “We wanted to make this song sound huge and emotional. We want to give you goose bumps with this one” Rex says, jokingly.

This is all just the tip of the iceberg for The Midway, however. The band is already filling their fall calendar with shows. Singer/Guitarist Mike Rex says, “We have so much more to show the world, so get ready!”
